Food historians believe this cake originated in the mid 1700’s in the Black Forest Region (Baden-Württemberg) of Germany. This region is known for its sour cherries and Kirsch (a clear cherry brandy made from the sour Morello cherry).  Some say the cake may have been made to resemble the traditional costume worn by women in the Black Forest.
