Oranges, oranges, oranges. Spices, spices, spices. When you can't make up your mind, you could make both, or you could combine them. I'm quite sure this has been done before (there are a few cookie recipes floating around), but I managed to knock this together with help from Sarah's post (inspired by Nigel Slater, who is apparently teh shiz) about the basic . It has no milk, which I like, because I don't buy milk and am always cautious of substitutung with soymilk. I'm much more of a yoghurt fan, mostly because you get two doses of goodness (a shot of dairy and a small helping of good bacteria to help digestion and your immune system). While the original basic has no cooking oil, I put some in and lessened the butter content to make it a little easier on your arteries AND to keep the soft the next day (I tend to find butter cakes go a bi…

Oooo - exciting for me - I’m hosting my very first food event!

Well, technically it isn’t my food event, Think Spice… is the brain child of the wonderful Sunita of Sunita’s World. But I do get to choose the spice… and do the round up… so I think maybe this month it is mine, just a little!*

The spice I have chosen for this month’s entry is fenugreek. Also known as methi, fenugreek is a common spice in Indian cooking - and one of the oldest medicinal spices. It was used by the ancient Egyptians for embalming - but I really would prefer no entries of that order!

My Turn! Think Spice… Think…. Fenugreek!

After moving to this new Copenhagen place of mine (I finally moved my very last bit out), I wanted to do something for myself. Something that would:

A. Make myself feel like a real home with real responsibilities,
B. up my every day.

Keeping these in mind I decided to:

1. Plant my own plants - I bought mango, dates and an avocado. I ate all of them and planted the seeds. It is very easy, I have done that before. As each time I forget which way to plant them, I simply lay dates seeds horizontally about 2 cm underground and with mango, I lay it with the spiky corner downwards - both avocado and mango seeds buried half-way through the ground.
I also planted my own herbs - coriander, basil, sage, rosemary, thyme,… etc.

2. I underwent a serious inspection of my spices and threw out half of them, due to the fact that they have been around probably longer than me. And I bought fresh new ones. Wow, is there a diffe…

Announcing Think Spice, Think Nutmeg

July 1st, 2008

This month Think is hosted by Krishna of Cooking from A to Z and features wasabi. It’s a great choice - I can’t wait to see the different dishes that come out of the round up! Since the first time I ate sushi I’ve loved - but I’ve never really used it in cooking. Krishna gave us a couple of vital hometruths:

isn’t horseradish!
I did know that one! Although… it is from the same family (the Brassicaceae if you’re interested) and is often called Japanese horseradish!

And not only isn’t horseradish - often it isn’t even !! The worst of the pretenders (supermarket tubes!) is no more than a mix of horseradish++food colouring - and even the restaurants generally cheat away from the real thing.
! I did
