As part of my get fit in ‘09 campaign, I’ve taken on hiking as a new hobby. Our first hike was Dawn Mine, one of the more promising gold prospects in the San Gabriels, which worked intermittently from 1895 until the 1950s. The Dawn Mine Loop is a 6 mile hike, with a 1600 feet elevation gain. It’s a beautiful hike, with a running stream, and remnants of LA’s gold mining history scattered along the trail.
